...or everyone will know you're an Evil Kitten Stomper.

A nice concatenation of the better responses to the "Gay Rights Meme"-sheepery can be found here.

(Link thanks to a comment in [livejournal.com profile] surliminal's journal.)

I also like the Bear's response.

If you want to do something for queer rights, hold hands with same sex friends in public places. In Missisipi. Declaring your loyalty to the cause to a circle of people who have in large part been pre-selected FOR AGREEING WITH YOU doesn't impress me much. That just looks like trying to browbeat your squeeing fangrrls into doing likewise so you can feel important.

Um, you mean Mississippi of course, and I must admit deep amusement to see it spelled wrong because I keep hearing how hard it is to spell, but nobody ever does around these parts. By these parts I mean Jackson MS, where I am for the rest of the week and, well who knows how long thereafter? I'm not aware of any gay pride activity here. In fact I've met gay Republicans here (like WFT?). I'd support gay pride if it came up, but aside from that I've been to gay dance clubs here. They are hidden away in rundown parts of town and get customers through word of mouth as it is not safe to advertise. I even went to a drag queen competition at a gay African American nightclub where I was one of three white people present (a gay friend who I went to clubs with was African American) and thoroughly enjoyed myself. But it's not really possible to hold my gay friend's hands in public because my gay friends are too afraid to be in public.

Still, I agree with the sentiment expressed, that more should be done, but it applies to whining about most any big issue, like the war in Iraq, or the US government approving torture, etc. Many complain on LJ or with their friends, but very very few do anything concrete about it, hell most don't even vote.

Still, spreading the word and openly supporting your gay friends as that meme does, does have some value as it lifts a small corner of the veil. It's not much, but it is something.

But I'll add that I hate chain-letter type thingies like that.

I wasn't suggesting your male friends had to be gay to hold hands with them. Quite the opposite, really.

And I don't think passing memes around amongst a bunch of people who already agree with each other *does* lift the veil, and because of the nature of LJ most people don't have a big enough microphone here to reach significantly beyond that closed circle.

So, yea, plus ten for laudable sentiment, zero for effectiveness, minus ten for coercive approach.

My constant response has been, "I believe in a lot of things I don't post on my journal." I loathe the loaded question fallacy.

I didn't because I don't do the meme thing: did it once and it didn't do anything for me. I'm not all that thrilled about someone telling me what to put in my journal, either. I know I don't post in it as much as I'd like to but what I do post is because it's something I decided to do not something expected of me.
