Let the withdrawal symptoms begin.

Hi, I'm Ulrika and I'm a socialholic. My fannish engine thrives on far-flung friends and good conversation, and it ran pretty hot, happily humming along on all twelve cylinders burning the heady, high octane mixture that was Worldcon. Now I must readjust to the far leaner mix of ordinary life in the post-Clarion West Seattle season, but I can tell from the knocking and pinging and reluctance to idle that I am not happy about it. The major symptom so far is the way I keep rechecking LJ too frequently, looking for an overflowing foment of chat and conreports and retrieved conversational threads well beyond what's reasonable to expect. When I don't find it, I bang on the monitor a bit: "Hey, hello?? Hello?! Is this thing on?!?" and then shuffle away muttering. I need stimulation, dammit. Common, you bastards, entertain me!

More sanguine blogging will resume presently. I hope. Thank Ghu it's Vanguard on Saturday.

I suppose I should be thankful that I come home from these things with a burning desire to spend more time reading. Actually, I had a burning desire to spend more time reading while I was at Worldcon as well. Considering how many unread books I have, this is a good thing.

I spent a pleasant hour one morning reading the first 50 pages of Garrett P. Serviss' Edison's Conquest of Mars. While doing so, I flashed back on reading one of Dick's novels in that same hotel lobby in 19-ought-84. (Or was that in 19-ought-96?) If the next LACon is in the same Hilton, I wonder if I'll finally figure out how to find my way around the maze on the fifth floor ...

If the next LACon is in the same Hilton, I'm bringing a Sharpie to put room numbers on the fire-exit "you are here" maps.

I was disseminating your idea of color gradient walls, btw. All agree, it's brilliant. But I like the idea of wiki-izing the firemaps, too. That should be done, irrespective of if there's another LAcon there...

Having gotten close to doing so myself I suspect that the Facilities folks had spent so much time in the hotel and gotten to know it so well that they were no longer aware of how confusing the place was. In the crush of a Worldcon it happens.

After a day or so Filthy did his usual quietly putting in place an efficient way of handling things: he posted maps with "You Are Here". It's so obvious that almost none of us would have thought of it.

yeah -- after the live interaction of the past week, LJ feels like all my conversational gambits are being snubbed, waah. Need to reset expectations. (No, will not take up text-messaging.)

Yes, that's it exactly! Why is everyone ignoring me? Ha! Withdrawal, indeed.

Even I, famous introvert that I am, find myself longing for this and that, esp. thises and thats I missed at worldcon. I spent the afternoon having lunch with and then chauffering Ellen and Delia which I enjoyed immensely. And I'm going to the reading tonight and then there's Vanguard! I'm running short of time to write, I tell ya!

Watch this pocketwatch as it sways back and forth. You are getting sleepy. You will make time to write. You will write a short story for DP. You will...hey! No falling asleep!

I think this may be the first time I've come home from a Worldcon neither overstimulated and crazed from the subsequent let-down nor disappointed that it wasn't as much fun as I'd hoped. There have been so few "just right" Worldcons, and this was one of them.

I don't have anything social to look forward to until OryCon.

When you come to OryCon, let's do food.

That sounds excellent. It's a deal.

But yes!

Man, I am having my withdrawal right now, I think. I am suddenly really bummed that it's 9pm on a Friday night and I am not hanging out with fifty of my closest friends plus some guy in a Wookie suit.
