It's there again. That chilly taste of autumn on the wind. I notice the horse chestnut trees are turning bronze around the edges, and the spiky seed pods are fat and lime green. The miniature maples by Miller Hall, too, starting little edges of some-color-not-green around the little five-fingered leaves. And on the walk in front of the Union building, a single yellow and scarlet maple leaf, the color of a ripe pippin apple. It's coming.

I started lighting pumpkin spice candles today, because I'm crazy about autumn like that. The ever-so-slight bite in the air has been wonderful, I agree.

Autumn is my absolute favorite time of the year. Anything can happen. It's time for new adventures and the beginning of new things.

It's supposed to be 88 here all week, and I have a third batch of house finch fledglings at the feeder. Usually there's only two batches a summer.

This may amuse you. My cow-orker Jan told me it was supposed to be hot tomorrow and through the rest of the week. Hot here was defined as "in the 80s". We have it rough, I tell ya.

Well, in the DC area, it's not just the heat, it's the humidity! It's not quite breathing-through-a-wet-rag today, but closer than I'd like.

Chill in the air -- birds too

Fall is coming too early. Last week, I saw two flockings of small birds, chickadees, finches, towhees, and similar birds for migration. They chowed down on about 20 lbs of bird seed just at my place, and left without bidding ado. This is about 3 to 4 weeks early. If you live in a migration flightway, put out water. Coming north this spring, thousands of birds died of dehydration.

I find fall a sad season.
