Oh, Yay, Los Angeles in August

The Fates want me at Worldcon. Alaska had been offering a really decent rate to fly in and out of Long Beach a coupla weeks ago -- just over $200. But then I waited too long to book it, and it went poof. So then I was going to have to pay more like $300. Shelling out an extra $100 just for being a teensy bit tardy, well, it made me cranky and I sulked for a while. Then I decided to put it off until payday, and just hope the rates didn't go up *again*. So it was with some trepidation that I got up this morning and pointed my browser to kayak.com and spun up a fare search. *Ping* SEA->LGB: $217. And so I fell on it with cries of glee and now I have me a ticket to Worldcon. And a membership. Total cost so far: $217. Now to waffle indecisively about whether to get a rental car.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When do you fly in/out? I think the family's mini-van is already filled to capacity. Where you stayin'?

I'll fly in Thursday morning, and back out again Monday morning. I'm not sure where I'll stay yet -- I may lightly troll about for someone who wants a roomshare or possibly check into crashing with Hal's mom. If the latter, then I'll definitely want to take that rental car.

Hmm. I think on the crash space I'd rather be in Orange County at least. I'm still prefering finding a share in the con hotels if I can. But thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind in case desperation arises.

My flight is scheduled to get in at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday. In Light Of Recent Events, god only knows what that really means, but that's what it says on the itinerary.

The arrival date is August 24 -- yes, that's two weeks from today. Departure date is August 28, the following Monday. I don't currently have any fixed plans about how to get from the airport but if you're volunteering, naturally that would be tickety-boo. I figure even my worst case scenario shouldn't be that bad, trying to get from any So. Cal. airport to the immediate vicinity of Disneyland.

When did you want to arrive? Maia has clasess (since her break ends the week before) but I don't know what they are yet, nor how free her afternoons can be made (the schedule is very programmed).

At the con? Oh, I was assuming heading there semi-directly. It occurs to me that a side-trip to the Long Beach Johnny Reb's for a late breakfast or early lunch might be very nice, though. Certainly I'm hoping to hit one Johnny Reb's or another over the course of the visit.

On the other hand, if it doesn't work out, no huhu. Just let me know reasonably far in advance so I can make alternate plans as needed.

Ah, yes, "recent events". If US airlines follow the lead of UK ones, apparently you won't be allowed to take, in the cabin, either any electronic equipment or any books or magazines. With any luck, this won't be the case by then, but... it _is_ the kind of thing They do to make us feel safer and well-cared-for, I guess. *sigh*
