I only just started Naomi Novik's His Majesty's Dragon, but I've already been sucked in so deep I was a little fearful of missing my busstop. Patrick O'Brian with dragons, indeed. I think I shall take a full hour lunch today. Whee! There's nothing like the pleasure of being in good authorial hands.

on the basis of your and athenais' enthusiasm, I grabbed Black Powder War off the grocery store rack yesterday. Do I need to save it for after the first book, do you think?

I can't tell yet whether the second book is likely to be independent enough to stand on its own. I would think there isn't anything so very weird that you couldn't pick it up on the fly if you start with the second book. On the other hand, the first book is enough of an "origins" story that I expect having read the second book first would create some spoilers for the early parts of the first book. If you really dislike having plot spoilers, I would read the first book first. King County Library has it, I know, though I expect I'll buy my own copies of all three books.
