God Save Us from Our Friends
Jan. 2nd, 2006 09:46 pmI think I have some inkling how the staff of The Onion feels. Every time someone stumbles on one of their parodies out of context and takes it as legitimate news reportage, they get bales of solemn, prosy letters about the decadent, apocalyptic awfulness of yadda yadda, world without end. Eventually they must simply despair of the critical reading abilities of their fellow simians. Certainly, many times they haven't even the heart to say, "Hey, it was a joke."
Now here's
bellatrys writing up his personal top hits list for Stupid Statements of 2005, getting his knickers in a twist because Matthew Yglesias, well-known realpolitischer war-blogger is seriously advocating that "we have the right and duty and not just the power to invade Canada" here. I'm still idly hoping that at some point
bellatrys will own up to the boner. One prefers to believe in the intellectual honesty of one's political allies, and I've certainly seen
bellatrys make sharp and cogent observations in the past. And frankly I don't like to be reminded that at one time, I thought I had pretty good cause to view liberals as humorless. But so far the silence has been a bit deafening since I pointed out my reading of the Yglesias piece in detail.
