Sarah was born in summer, so when she was quite small I taught her to play with ice cubes. I would set one down on the kitchen floor and Sarah would pounce on it like a kitten. The ice would go skittering away across the vinyl flooring and Sarah would scrabble on after it, sliding awkwardly and batting away at the retreating ice with her paws. This was good for several moments of puppy amusement before she would catch the ice in her mouth and haul her prize over to the Chinese rug to chew into little melting splinters. Today she was not so much in the mood for playing chase on the linoleum, but it's still good to chew an icecube to splinters on the carpet. Some things don't change.

Happy summer.

You're dog is almost as cute as mine! Morgan also takes ice cubes to the rug. Also kibble -- she carries it in her mouth and drops it on the rug, or worse, in my bed.

Sarah doesn't so much carry kibble away to eat as she has sufficienly loose, droopy jowls that kibble will come along for a ride. If we haven't just vacuumed there will be a sort of atomic-particle probability cloud model of kibble bits spreading away from where her bowl is.

My parents' German shepherd Daisy still begs for ice cubes; she'll catch it if you toss it to her. She does the same for salad.
