To be redeemed for actual posts at a later time.

Yesterday morning, as I was waking up and trying to talk myself into some level of enthusiasm for getting to work on time, it struck me forcibly that I have an internal script that does a lot of damage to my life. It goes, "I am a disappointment." I have quite a lot more to say on that, stuff about mothers and daughters and the life my Mom forewent when she decided on (or was bullied into -- hard to say there) keeping me, about life expectations, personal successes, and the internal scripts that, as much as luck and a support network, go into making them. But I have to marshal my thoughts a bit to make that coherent. In the meantime, it was also interesting to discover that if I deliberately overwrite "I am a disappointment," with "You are a sad disappointment to your mother," it pokes a right proper hole in the former, and I can mock it, and make it small. And that seems like a good thing to do. Anyway, more on that later, after I have a bit of a think.

On a lighter note, I was pleased to discover that there's a local rock trio who specialize in music for kids called Recess Monkey.

Also, have a picture of a cat:
Impressionist Kitty is Impressionistic

I'm especially pleased with that one for a number of reasons, not least because it is a good likeness of Tinka, who is usually nearly impossible to photograph well by dint of being (nominally) black, and also because something about it inexplicably reminds me of Renoir's Manet's "Bar at the Folies Bergere".

Awesome photo--it looks like something very dramatic could be about to happen... *g*

Did Renoir do a Folies Bergère, too? Or just Manet? I had a quick internet look and am confused--there seem to be reports of both, although Manet is most prevalent...

Ah, no, I guess I mean Manet and had a brain cloud. That is, it's possible Renoir did one, too, but the Manet was the one I was thinking of.

I also have a lot of those "I am a disappointment" moments. I wish I had something helpful to offer you.

I think the photo is very reminiscent of Steilen's Chat Noir poster -- both in Tinka's attitude and in the color palette. Also the fan echoes the decorative halo behind Steinlen's cat.

If you figure out how to get rid of the "I am a disappointment" thing, I am all ears.

Lovely, lovely photo--the shadows, the colors, the light!

Data point: I have always found you to be a formidable woman. Myself, I can't imagine you being a failure in anyone's eyes.

And that picture of Tinka is just gorgeous. What a beautiful puss!

Well, I'm familiar with the painting but would have been hard pressed to say who painted it, so you're way ahead of me! I probably would have said Renoir, too...

Well I'm not going to go out and shoot myself over the confusion. :) I think it's particularly understandable in that some of Renoir's women -- check the one with the cameo on a ribbon in Le Moulin de la Galette -- are reminiscent of Manet's. They knew each other, they may have been using the same model. At the very least, I think my memory of the former tends to overlay the latter.

I have that same internal script. I...haven't found a way to poke a hole in it yet.

Well, you can never be too cautious when pointing out Impressionist mix-ups... *g* I'm sure some people take these things very seriously. (When I searched for an image to refresh my memory, I came across some sort of gallery website where they're selling copies? posters? of this one, boldly attributed to Renoir. Those people might feel chagrined to know that they got it wrong on their business site!)

Their subjects really are so similar! Manet's colors just tend to be more bold and the images sharper, I think.

Also, your "sad disappointment to your mother" phrase cracks me up--it really does make it so much more universal and thus powerless, in a way, I think.

I think we should have a really good post on this topic. Too many fabulous, interesting, successful, fascinating and intelligent women have a script just like that.

It's a great photo of Tinka.

I'm glad you have found a way to poke a hole in the script, "I am a disappointment," because you are so very much NOT a disappointment!

That's an amazing picture. That look on Tinka's face! Don't cross her.

That is a lovely photo of a beautiful cat.

Good moment of self-realisation. Sometimes a single thought can move one a long way.

Tinka always has an expression I think of as "mildly disgruntled".

Very nice!

And also... slightly disgruntled, somehow.

One of the best pet photos I've seen, really - not for cuteness but for drama, composition and awesome lighting. Also, I'm weak on my art history (only ever took a class in it in SWEDEN at the gymnasieskola I attended in Uppsala) but I know the painting you're referencing and like, yeah!

I know that the comments of people-who-are-not-yr-mother have different weight from the comments of people-who-are-yr-mother, but I will say that you are not at all a disappointment as a friend, either in the casual, fun to be with category or in the more substantial reliable in a bad time category. So there, nanny boo boo to that old script, and congratulations on having a way to whack it with a stick.

Mock your demons any way you can: ol' Satan and his minions can't abide not being taken seriously.
