Some days, I wonder how the folks at The Onion can find anything to say, because the plain facts so thoroughly defy parody that I am gobsmacked. It turns out that Bill Frist -yes, that would be Senate Majority Leader Frist - used to get cats from shelters, claiming he wanted them as pets, so he could practice surgery on them. The practice tended to be fatal to the cats. I mean, what the hell? And PETA, normally far from my favorite organization, would like him to sponsor legistlation promoting more humane approaches to animal testing by way of attonement. Looks like maybe even PETA can be right sometimes.

The Daily Show evidently dealt with this issue in mid-January. Clips here.

I have to say I was (almost) speechless when told of Frists comment about George Sorros a few months back, so I find myself only a bit bemused by this revelation.

Personally, I think Frist ought to offer to let surgery students practice on his body. But I am not a Nice Person.

Yeah, this came out some while back (my mind tells me it was about six months ago).

Frist made various non-noises and it disappeared.

I'm not sure how I feel about PETA, my opinion of Frist is so low that anything he does which might seem in the least rehabilitive is wrong.

And him telling PETA to piss off won't lose him any votes, so as a way to make him look bad, if he won't play along, this seems less than wonderful.

Even moreso since we can be reasonably sure he could play it both ways, sponsor the bill, and let it die, or get it to the fooor, where it dies, either in the senate, or in the house (Magic, Inc., where the religious types get maginc banned in one house, because they've arranged to have it killed in the other, thus making their constituents happy).

Frist is scum. His recent attempts (which look more likely of success then SS "reform") to get catastrophic health care; to be carried by individuals (with the attendant high premiums, and high deductibles) seems no more than a way to tax the poor, to the benefit of the insurers (since the odds of many people paying the $1,600, average, deductible, on preventive care is slim, so the costs for that go down, and then the back end, late discovery of conditions, so the odds of long-term, i.e. successful, treatment also drop.

As you say, one wonders where The Onion looks to find the ability to parody.

Children who torure animals become serial killers, but if they wait till they get to med school, they merely become Republicans.
