Grumblings

Imagine someone taking the world's largest rapidly melting Slurpee, dumping it on the city, and then pissing on the resulting mess from a great height, and you basically have this morning's Seattle weather. I was in a rush tumbling into my clothes in the dark this morning, too, so I decided I didn't have time for the more-or-less waterproof lace-up boots. Epic strategic error. All of the snow in the city fell after last night's rush hour, and I come to work a half hour before the campus really wakes up, so every sidewalk, gutter, and verge between the bus and my office was pretty much heaped with sloppy wet, semi-frozen slush, except for the bits that had turned into spontaneous cascades of rapidly rushing, freezing water. And my suede mocs, fine for your typical mizzly Seattle rain, soaked through long before I even reached the ungroomed paths of campus. Bah. Then, after I stepped out of Bulldog news with my chai in hand, it began to rain huge wet freezing drops of rain, and there's me with my umbrella still tucked in the side pocket of my backpack.

So here I sit in my damp stocking feet, with a panel heater under my desk, trying to dry out my twice-soaked shoes. Yes, twice-soaked, because of course after I had sort-of dried out the worst of the sloppiness from the slog in to the office, it was time to go off to my Mandarin class to take a test. Insult, meet injury.

Yeah, and the graveyard guy is on vacation at Hal's work, and Hal has the pager, so he keeps getting support calls from the temp in the middle of the night.

And now the copier keeps jamming whenever anyone tries to make transparencies. Oh, and the tooth that I had worked on last week still hurts. It's a good thing I have a naturally cheerful disposition, I tell you what. Otherwise it might be enough to make a girl cranky.

Someone clearly needs a slosh of bourbon in her coffee this morning.

[Must be careful not to mention how I work at home. Or the crockpot bubbling away with chili-chicken soup.]

I would settle for my shearling-lined slippers and a dry pair of wool socks. Of course, if you wanted to bring me some of that soup, I wouldn't object. :) :)

I've given it a midnight deadline to get the hell out. Still, could have been worse. I was not the person who discovered that persons unknown had vomited in first floor hallway this morning. And Chavdar the Eastern European Xerox Dude came quite promptly, and fixed the machine equally so. And I managed to dry my shoes, mostly, without actually setting them on fire.

Great minds think alike. I've been comparing my walk to work this morning to walking through a slurpee. I wore my "waterproof" boots, but I've still got damp socks. However, nobody is calling my husband in the middle of the night.

Yeah, and here's me thinking that the effects of TAFF are long-lasting. My first post of the year, and what am I doing? Bitching about the weather. I'm still an honorary Brit.
