Date: 2010-04-16 05:42 pm (UTC)I hope this works. In the case that Obama particularly cites, the excluded bereaved had an appropriate power of attorney, which ought to have been enough to allow visitation, but it didn't.

Date: 2010-04-16 05:58 pm (UTC)"There are many other ways to deal with this issue, whether through a health care proxy or power of attorney, through private contractual arrangements. We have no problem with those situations," Duffy said, "but the fact here is that this is undermining the definition of marriage."
WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN.
1. You mean those private contractual agreements that hospitals HAVE IGNORED IN THE PAST? The ones that this policy simply says THEY HAVE TO LISTEN TO when dealing with visitation?
2. Apparently marriage is no longer "for the children", it's "for the bigoted hospital staff so they don't have to watch you say goodbye to someone you love".
I say this in the most loving and compassionate way possible: FUCK YOU, J.P. DUFFY.

Date: 2010-04-17 03:30 pm (UTC)Somewhat obviously, I guess - we are, too. :) We already have that protection in WA (the original domestic partners act was mostly about death benefits, hospital visitation, etc.) but that Florida story made my blood boil when it happened. I know it just makes the crazies even more batshit crazy but *raspberries* to them!
