What a difference it makes just to have sanity in office.

I hope this works. In the case that Obama particularly cites, the excluded bereaved had an appropriate power of attorney, which ought to have been enough to allow visitation, but it didn't.

J.P. Duffy, vice president for communications at the Family Research Council, said Obama is pandering to a radical special interest group.

"There are many other ways to deal with this issue, whether through a health care proxy or power of attorney, through private contractual arrangements. We have no problem with those situations," Duffy said, "but the fact here is that this is undermining the definition of marriage."

WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN.

1. You mean those private contractual agreements that hospitals HAVE IGNORED IN THE PAST? The ones that this policy simply says THEY HAVE TO LISTEN TO when dealing with visitation?

2. Apparently marriage is no longer "for the children", it's "for the bigoted hospital staff so they don't have to watch you say goodbye to someone you love".

I say this in the most loving and compassionate way possible: FUCK YOU, J.P. DUFFY.

Yeah, I got no love for NPR's 'balance' policy that leads them to talk to the barkingest tool in the bucket to provide an 'alternate view'.

It's a good start. Personally, I'm waiting for him to restore habeas corpus for non-citizens.

Why should non-citizens get special treatment? :) :)

Yes, I know, there is a ton of work to be done just to restore basic civil rights to levels they were at prior to 9/11, and not all of it will get done in this term or this administration, but I think it's good to celebrate the victories.

"Why should non-citizens..."? Try: "We hold that all men are endowed... with...the rights to ..." (Okay, I'll (eagerly) go along with "men = people".) (And yes, I recognize that you're using irony/sarcasm, there, but my response to the right-wingers is based on the simple "all" means _all_ literal interpretation approach, which they ought to be able to understand.)

I also get a kick out of the work on restricting nuclear weapons.

Sadly, I regret to say that I really can't be proud of a President who claims a Right to order the murder/assassination of anyone (including, but not limited to) American Citizens without due process of Law.

That's fine, but I hope you can be happy for the people who benefit from this executive order regarding hospital visitation. Pride in the president is kind of beside the point.

I am proud of him, too. He has made decisions with which I am not happy, but I reserve the right to try to change his mind on those, (such as some of the "anti-terror" practices he's chosen to see continued from previous administrations, both Dem and GOP), while celebrating the decisions of his which I think are good ones.

Today I am awfully proud of our President.

Somewhat obviously, I guess - we are, too. :) We already have that protection in WA (the original domestic partners act was mostly about death benefits, hospital visitation, etc.) but that Florida story made my blood boil when it happened. I know it just makes the crazies even more batshit crazy but *raspberries* to them!
