You know what sucks? Being up at half past two with a sore throat that you just know is going to blossom into some nasty viral thing, and therefore knowing that what you really need is to get some bloody sleep, and yet being Wide Fucking Awake no matter what. I guess I'll shuffle off for my third tot of bourbon and a hot cup of tea with honey. But this bites, I tell you. It's not even as if I've taken antihistamines, which would keep me this awake, and yet I can't take hot milk because if I do, I will have a Head Full of Snot [tm] in the morning.

This sucks, I tell you.

Ah, sorry about that. Yes, I was sorry to miss you all, but I didn't think passing on a good dose of the flu was the nicest possible parting gift for the rest of your journey. About the time Hal got to the pub, I was already in bed.

Bleurgh. Hope you didn't pass the virus along at lunch yesterday! (Why yes, I am a selfish bastard.)

Yes, well, I hope I didn't pass it along, too. There's nothing particularly selfish in not wanting to be sick. Luckily, we didn't spend too much time snogging, so I'm hoping you're safe and clear.

True, but we did *almost* get worked up about RaceFail and Israel, so who knows what kind of spittle flew? Still, so far so good.

Oh, man, I so sympathize. I know that feeling all too well. The horrible burning, which gets worse when you lie down, yet you can't really sleep sitting up either... the awful despair... *shudder*

Malt whisky was the most efficacious for me, but I suppose bourbon will do. And ibuprofen helped dull the pain enough to get brief naps, during the day anyway... nothing helped at night. Hang in there, in a day or two you'll get so congested the stuff will quit going down the back of your throat. A more tolerable misery.

My, you have had this variant before, haven't you? Yes, that's it exactly. I've been scoffing Ricola's like there's no tomorrow, but they only help for as long as the lozenge lasts.

I dislike wasting single malt on a cold -- here in Washington, the selection you can get is rather more limited, being curtailed by what the State liquor stores will carry -- so I take the Bulleit bourbon instead, because I know I can get more. It's not a bad little bourbon, actually, and a whole lot cheaper than Springbank, when I can even get it.

Good reasoning, for a sickie! I sure wouldn't waste Springbank on myself when too sick to really enjoy it; even down here, that stuff is pretty rare. In Embra there's a shop, down near the bottom of the Royal Mile, which has the Compleat Springbank Collection... different ages, vintages, etc. An awesome sight.

Hope that throat gets better. Mine used to keep me from sleeping for two or three nights in a row, then the congestion and chest cold would set in. By which time I was too miserable to care.

Hey, here's a suggestion: nasal irrigation. I've been doing that for a while, partly to combat sinus irritation from allergies etc, and it seems to help prevent colds and reduce their severity. Weird as hell, but effective.

I don't know which is worse about nasal irrigation: the pain or sounding like a backed-up garbage disposal.

Hmmm, I don't get pain at all (unless I forget to mix the salt in - unsalted water burns like fire), nor much gurgling. I do get a crick in my neck, and frequently end up with a bunch of salt water in my mouth if I get the head-tilt wrong. It's a PITA for sure, but worth it to prevent sinus congestion, headaches, or infections.

I was recently taught how to make a wonderful hot buttered rum. The secrets are maple syrup and freshly grated nutmeg. It's been working quite well for my annual spring sinus infections. (Other people have sinuses; I have eight little Petri dishes in my face.) Let me know if you'd like to see my new skill in mixology.
