The Bottom of the Garden

I don't get out of the office enough. My train schedule makes for short days, so I usually skip lunch or eat it at my desk. Today I had a work errand on main campus and decided to bring the camera with me. The light was kinda crappy but it's good to see the fall progressing on main campus. I miss that so. I also collected a pocketful of horse chestnuts, and more photos.

The lighting is just magical, so diffuse.

Around these parts, we call that "cloudy". :) Oh, well, at least it wasn't raining. (Not that I mind rain in the ordinary way, but it isn't that good for photography.)

Whoa, cloudy, what a concept....I know it theoretically exists, same as cold, but I find it hard to believe either exist.

I know exactly what you mean. When I was still at Irvine I was packing for a trip to Sweden around this time of year, and we were having one of those 100 degree heat waves, but I was packing for Sweden in October so I knew intellectually that I needed to pack wool sweaters and heavy boots and socks and such, but it was so hot in the apartment that I almost could not bring myself to do it. My gut could not believe that there was anywhere on Earth that wasn't sweltering hot.

Yes! If I had the great good luck to go to WFC, I'm sure I'd pack my best sleeveless t-shirts and shorts. And I don't own any shoes besides my sandals.

Those are handsome geraniums. I like the third photo a lot.

Sometimes in the fall I really miss Seattle. And then I wake up.

Having a real fall is one of the things that continues to please me six years on. The Bay Area isn't so very bad, but Southern California doesn't get a proper autumn, and so I pined for one for years.

I like the way the geraniums somehow gained an air of fecund mystery by way of the tight close up. In real life, they're a very mundane concrete planter of ivy geraniums by Schmitz Hall.

Third photo - thanks! I wish it caught the color and the light better -- the range of colors and the luminous quality of the leaves were much more striking in real life. But I'm not that good at compensating for the mucky, gray light.

Oh, I think you are. That's an awfully good photo, that third one.

Those leaves look oddly familiar.

That *geranium* should look bloody familiar. It lives outside your building.

That old-fashioned kind of geranium is pretty much invisible to me. Wallpaper, I tell ya.

Yeah, that makes sense. They are the generic potted plant, somehow.
