Your Hostess, the Dork
Oct. 28th, 2004 10:11 amI try to ride the bus to work as often as I can. Not only is the cost of parking in the U-District fairly prohibitive, but as we get into the swing of autumn, the commute across 520 is clogging up with other single commuters taking up space on the roadway and turning the last couple of miles into a parking lot. I hate slow traffic. The bus, on the other hand, gets to use the HOV lane all the way to the bridge. But this week I have been having the worst time getting the hell out of bed. I am, for a change, so ready for the end of daylight savings when 7:15 becomes 6:15 and running late turns into being up chipper and early.
Today I pushed out of the house late, figuring I was just going to miss my bus and have to drive all the way in to work. But in fact I made good time to the park-and-ride, and other than sweating the slow light at BCC, I was feeling confident of my chances. I pull into the parking lot with perhaps a minute to spare, grab my stuff, and alight onto the tarmack just as my bus pulls up. With a flourish, I slam the locked driver's side door shut, and head for the bus. Two steps along I feel a tug on my jacket. Turning back, I find that one of the verdammte adjustment cords from the bottom edge of my parka is caught in the door. No chance of just pulling it out: the toggle is inside the door. I fumble out my keys and unlock the car door, fumble further with unhooking the cord off the seat adjustment lever, relock the door, and slam it again. The bus is still standing, waiting for people to queue on. I grab my purse and book bag off the roof of the car, and bolt for the bus. Only to be pulled up short again. Yes, this time, I locked the strap of my purse into the car door.
I made it. No thanks to my personal grace, mind you, but by some miracle I managed to steam up at the end of the line just in time. I wonder if there's any work still available for Keystone Kops?
