Saw this bit of cleverness in the comments over at Scalzi's blog: RATS = Roberts, Alito, Thomas, Scalia. This, of course, in the context of today's ruling by the Supremes that the Constitution means what it says and you can't deny Habeas Corpus to US detainees even if they aren't citizens, and even if George Bush says they're scary people. The ruling upheld the actual Constitution by a scary thin 5-4 margin. And you can guess who the four were. Yes, the RATS.

There are so many reasons why it's crucial that the Democrats win back the White House. But maintaining that 5-4 balance on the Court has got to be near the top of the list. Because four of the youngest Justices on the Court -- likely to be there for a long, long time -- are ready and waiting to sell us all down the river -- feminists, progressives, minority voters, civil libertarians, the lot -- the minute they achieve a majority. A filibuster-proof majority in the Senate sure would be nice, but someone who isn't John McCain in the White House is vital. Or kissing Roe v. Wade goodbye will be just the beginning.

Not quite the 4 youngest

Scalia's 72, older than Kennedy, Souter, and Breyer. Not that it changes the conclusion.

Huh. I would never have pegged Scalia for that old. He looks so damn' young.

Have you ever heard the Capitol Steps song "How do you solve a problem like Scalia"?

No, but from the title alone, it sounds perfect.
