Well, I have read The Gospel of the Knife, Firebirds, Firebirds Rising, and Territory, and I'm not quite in the mood for Sixty Days and Counting, and pretty much all the rest of the fiction is in boxes in the garage, pending the painting of the livingroom.

So. I need to find something to read, and I'll have the free range of the King County Library System to do it in, so books don't have to be new or in print. I think I want something fairly fluffy, but very well written -- a brand new Georgette Heyer would be good. Or a new Sarah Caudwell. What should I read next, and why?

Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff! Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff! Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff! Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff! Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff!

etc.

I'm so eager to recommend this book that I barely read your post after seeing the subject line.

Well, it's not quite what you're requesting, but it's really really good. Yeah!

Hmm. Amazon's blurbs sound very interesting. It probably won't be what I read *next* though, because there are 36 holds ahead of me in the KCLS queue.

You've probably already read the latest Scott Lynch. Hmm.

I know: Sherwood Smith's new book The Fox isn't fluffy but it's a lot of fun and it is very well written. Especially if you've read Inda, and if you haven't, get that first.

I haven't actually already read the latest Scott Lynch, just because I was a bit meh about the first one, but I've added it to my little list of library holds anyway. Thanks for the reminder about Sherwood Smith, though, I have been meaning to check out her novel-length fiction after quite liking one of her shorts.

Oh, well, if you were meh about the first one the second one will definitely trip you up. I loved the first one and had a hard time getting into the second.

But I'm glad you're going to read Sherwood, because she is a wonderful writer.

The mention of Caudwell suggests you are not averse to reading mysteries. Do you know PD James and Ngaio Marsh? Very nice writing tho Marsh's books are older and show it a bit.

Have you read Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint and Privilege of the Sword. Lovely lovely writing and they can be as fluffy or as Meaningful as you like.

Lovely book, liked it lots, now it's in a box somewhere. But absolutely the right idea.

There's two sequels: The Grand Tour and The Mislaid Magician. I haven't read the last one yet, but the second one was good.

I thought The Grand Tour was the weakest of the three, but enjoyed them all.

Have you read anything by Tate Hallaway? (an alter ego of [livejournal.com profile] lyda222) Entertaining paranormal romance set in Madison, WI and the Twin Cities, about various types of witchy/pagan types, plus vampires. But not annoying in any way.

I'll second the Matt Ruff, which is entertaining but not quite light or fluffy. Fun, though.

Me, I just retrieved the latest Janet Evanovich, #13. They'd gone downhill for a few books, but #10 (or was it 11?) was restorative.
