At the outset of volunteering to take over the Potlatch website, I did not anticipate being quickly to the point where I could make a fair stab at interpreting text out of raw ISO 8859 character set code.

I'm not sure I view the ability as a good thing. It is far, far geekier than knowing publishers by ISBN, and more slow.

Back, again, to the bit mines.
