Okay, the last post is still cranking away, breaking all my personal records for comment response. I guess it struck a nerve. Lots of good suggestions for points I missed -- I could see the essay snowballing hugely if I ever went for revisions. Hell, it could almost be a franchise. I am amused to note, though, that several people end up "disagreeing" with, or adding to my list, but telling me things I already said. I guess I'd better work on my clarity, huh?

Congratulations on that nerve and your fifteen Warhol minutes. You were quite clear.

Polish it and send it to a paying market.

Gulp. Yessm. I, uh. Hmm. I guess I need to check if the library has a current copy of Writer's Market or something.

Slate or Salon, maybe, or BoingBoing (which may not pay).

What you have here is a few minutes -- okay, days -- before your work turns into something that everybody posts and reposts all over the universe without attribution. Anything that stirs up that much response that rapidly from that many people who don't already know you is a live topic.

I found that post via metaquotes, but squeed when I saw your name is Ulrika. Mine is the same only with an "e" on the end. Now, I'm filled with a very stalker-ish desire to know absolutely everything about you, simply because so very few Americans share the name.

Utterly fantastic essay! Thank you very much for posting it. I'm sad it got relocked, but at least I got to read it first...?

I tend to write more the other direction, being an American writer involved in a UK-based fandom (yes, Harry Potter), but it's awesome to get the perspective going both ways... ;)

Thanks!

There are almost no Americans named Ulrika, no. In my case, I have it because I started out as a Swede. If you spell it 'Ulrike' that's usually German, as I presume you know.

Glad you liked it. Thanks very much. I may unlock it again later -- I'm a bit skeptical of the paying markets -- but I didn't want it spiraling too far out of my control while I think about seeking a market for it.

Well, okay, in the same way I was talked into unlocking it, I've now put it back under friends-lock for the nonce, while I contemplate my options. I'm pretty happy just to be Warhol-ed (Warholed sounds unfortunate), but your cunning blandishments of potential for Real Publication have seduced me, you vile seducer you.

Yes. My mother attended high school in Germany and named me after her friend, so I have a German name, even though I was born and raised here and neither of my parents is German.
