The Supremes have struck down the Texas anti-sodomy law as unconstitutional. It doesn't make up for selling the country down the river at Florida, but it is a joyous thing to behold. The majority opinion agrees that consensual sex in private is protected by the participants' constitutional liberty interest, and the state has no overriding interest that could justify limiting that liberty. Damn right. About damn' time, too. And me without a rainbow ribbon to wear in support.

I thought it particularly nice of them to do it just in time for Gay Pride weekend. I must look into what's going on around here for that event. Since Volunteer Park is just up the street I'm planning on looking in on some of it.

As BBC News points out, the verdict "will present difficulties for President George W Bush...as he will have to comment on what is occurring in his home state. If he appears to condone homosexuality he will horrify many of his core supporters but if he backs the Texas law his hopes of winning more liberal suburban votes in next year's presidential elections could be damaged."

So he loses support whatever he says. Tee-hee.
