So, I stepped over to the Parnassus café to get myself a tall mocha. It was that, or a cataplectic nose-dive into my keyboard. And so I get to the counter and order my mocha and the dewy young fellow at the counter asks if I want whipped cream with it. In a moment of devil-may-care insouciance I allowed as I would. He turns to the barista who explains that they're out, and so he turns back to me, this blue-eyed, curly-haired, faintly rumpled young waif, and looks me dead in the eye as I'm trying to figure out my change and says, with a little gleam, "Sorry. I've got to stop teasing customers with the whipped cream." "Mmm. Yeah, it sounds really bad, for one thing." I got another little twinkle from him when he offered to set me up with a punch card.

Hmm. Perhaps I should switch to getting my coffee in the afternoons.

But doesn't everybody flirt with you?

I mean, isn't that the law?

But doesn't everybody flirt with you?

If so, quite a few are, shall we say, exceedingly cunning and subtle about it.

I mean, isn't that the law?

Well, it darned well should be. A girl can dream, certainly.

I did intend to comment earlier but have been busy the last couple of days racing a deadline (some wild urge to discover what keeping a promise was like). Anyway, as somebody who works in a coffee shop and thus deals with the general public lots and lots i've discovered that sending out a little wave of general charm heads off a great deal of potential friction. In such a job it's a useful defence against the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.

Oh, absolutely flirting is an excellent social lubricant in all sorts of public contact jobs. I'm told that it's the best known tactic for keeping the French, even the Parisian French, tractable and pleasant. I suppose I'm compelled to remark on this event and ones like it just because there seems to have been a marked uptick of, er, lubrication, in my general vicinity lately and being a good pseudoscientist, I'm curious about the etiology of same.
