So Much for MADD
Apr. 1st, 2005 10:01 amJulia has it all here, but in case you aren't the link-clicking type, a precis:
A pair of teenagers in Mississippi respond to the drunk-driving death of a friend by starting a designated driver program for their school. The program consists of teams of sober teenagers with a single cell phone who volunteer each Friday night to be on call for people who are too drunk to get home safely. The number of that phone is distributed around the school, and everyone knows they can call it if they're not willing to call their parents. The idea is that teenagers are going to drink anyway, whether they have a designated driver or not, but this way at least they get home alive afterwards. And MADD has issued a statement against the program, because it "condones teen drinking" and teens should not drink.
AAAAAAAUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
I really kinda hope this is some sort of April Fool's Day joke, but I think I'm going to write a letter to MADD anyhow. Sheesh.
