Most distracting thing about the movie Brave: heroine named after the capital city of the State of Yucatan. Though that was more distracting when reading reviews than listening to the film: as we discovered in a Mexican restaurant in Edinburgh, Scottish people cannot manage Spanish pronunciation even to save themselves from ridicule.

Second most distracting thing: Eerie degree of physical resemblance between Young MacIntosh and Alan Cumming, and trying to figure out if there's a voice cast pairing there. (There isn't.)

Best thing about Brave: La Luna - the Pixar-animated short that precedes the film. Not to say that Brave is bad, but rather that La Luna is really marvelous, a gorgeous little jewel-box of a film.

Biggest difference from watching kid-movie trailers in the late 1970s: Six gajillion trailers, and only *one* is for a live action film (well, sorta live-action - it was the trailer for The Hobbit, so it's been heavily breathed upon, digitally speaking).

Biggest sameness to watching kid-movie trailers in the late 1970s: Bumper crop of kid movie trailers, and NOT ONE is for a hand-animated film.

Merida is a name for girls, not just cities. It's my grandmother's name.

Mmm. Hardly a Gaelic one, though.

Yes, that makes much more sense.

Unfortunately, hand-animation is so expensive that it's almost to the point of being a showoff, ostentatious stunt rather than an artform.

Oh, yeah, I know, I get it -- it's why the animated feature-length film was in its death throes in the late 1970's -- much too expensive for the expected return. The two things that have changed since then is that so much of the labor has been ported over to computers AND the studios have realized that adults will in fact go to see an animated film. It's was just interesting to me to notice the differences and similarities in the same breath -- the fact that So Many feature-length films are now animated, and the fact that hand-animation has died the death anyway.

Ha! I remember that. The problem is, of course, that if you've never heard the correct pronunciation, you don't recognise it as being the same place - we did try using the correct pronunciation after you taught us, but no-one had the slightest idea where we meant and so we ended up backsliding....

Now, had it been an Italian restaurant things might have been slightly different as there's always been a fairly large Italian community in the east of Scotland.

There seems to be intense market segmentation in trailers.

You didn't mention how well you liked it. I did. My rating is "not one of pixar's best, which for anyone else would be 'like, whoah!'".
