2011 - Living in a surprisingly sunny mortgaged house in Kent, WA with
hal_obrien, two dogs and three cats. I'm commuting by train to the UW in Seattle and learning Mandarin Chinese on the side, while periodically helping my brother with the aftermath of our parents' deaths in 2010, and the clean-out and disposal of their home in California. Reading and occasionally posting to LiveJournal, worn out on political blogs, and mostly check in at Facebook only to play silly little thumbtwiddle games. Do not Tweet.
2001 - Living with Hal in a sunny, breezy rented apartment in Costa Mesa, CA, with one dog and one cat. I commute by car to UC Irvine, and spend most of my social networking time online in the Usenet community, rec.arts.sf.fandom, as Orange County might as well be Thule for all the sense of community it offers. At least we've been in OC long enough to figure out that good restaurants can be found in strip malls, because all the restaurants are in strip malls. There is Peruvian food! Toward the end of the year, Hal is laid off and decides he can just as readily look for work in Seattle as in OC. The end of the year also brings the New York and DC bombings, and a minor victim counted among the losses in the national post-traumatic freak out that follows, is the community that was rassf.
1991 - Living in sin with Hal in a gloomy but cheap and unbelievably central rented apartment in downtown Pasadena, CA without a single pet. Vanpooling to UCLA and working as an A/V tech at UCLA and a film projectionist at Raleigh Studios while finishing my BA at UCLA, planning our wedding, and applying to graduate programs in Philosophy. My online life mostly encapsulated in an AOL account and some BBSes, since I was forced to give up Usenet when I quit work at Caltech to go back to finish my BA. Lion's share of my social networking time is either through LASFS or APAs.
1981 - Living in the dorms at UCLA with assigned roommate who rows crew and swears like a longshoreman, later in a rented West LA apartment with chosen roommates from college and, for a while, former roommate's loudly demented elderly siamese cat. Non-siamese-loving roommate invents the Fishwasher Deception. I travel most places by city bus or hitched rides as I have no car of my own. Pre-computerized social networking in the form of APAs (Amateur Press Associations) - certainly APA-L and maybe LASFAPA but not yet MYRIAD or the SFPA waitlist of yore. Busy discovering SF fandom through LASFS and aphahacking.
1971 - Living in mortgaged house with parents, obnoxious kid brother, and complacent stray Maine Coon tomcat in San Jose, CA. Primary modes of social networking include playing marbles in the dirt lot at recess, and playing "Let's Pretend" with next door neighbor after school.
1961 - Living in utero in Wallingford UK and Karlskoga, Sweden. All social networking conducted through umbilicus and kicking Mom.
