Sea Changes
Apr. 5th, 2004 09:18 amI had a chat with a woman on the electrical repair crew today, about a light that refuses to flicker now that she's here. She was wearing a button I liked a lot: "Election 2004: The End of an Error". It only fully registered after she'd walked away again, or I would have complimented her on it. It's kind of stunning to see her wearing it, though. I have a MoveOn poster in my office window: "Regime Change Begins at Home: Vote" -- the first time the electrician saw it, she was hurt and confused by it. Enough so that she mentioned to me that she didn't understand why anyone would post such a thing. Now, it seems, she agrees with it. That's one revolution down.
And only last week, I found out via Avedon that Diana Moon had hung up her neo-con spurs and come out in favor of sending Bush back to Texas. Wow. She's writing like a reasonable human being now, even about Arabs and Muslims, whereas it was her unreasoning bigotry against those groups that drove me from reading her back when. My hat is off to her for the work and soul searching she had to have gone through to manage such a major change of heart and view. I would never have supposed she had it in her, and I am happy to to be humbled on that bet.
Not that the Bush regime doesn't still have plenty of otherwise intelligent adherents. I'll be truly over the moon when Daniel believes something as radical as that Bush is at least as much of an arrogant, rich, vacation-taking incompetent as Kerry, and Jerry admits the Bush administration has made some stupid mistakes in the prosecution of its War on Terra, but you know, I'm not holding my breath.
But, all in all, the forces of reason seem to be winning, one heart and mind at a time.
