In which Dr. Reid shows an alarming ignorance of philosophy for a polymath supposedly doing a BA in it. Just minutes earlier in the episode he re-demonstrated is complete lack of impulse control over blurting punctiliously complete and accurate data in situations where circumspection would better serve his practical goals, yet he somehow sits passively by when told that philosophy is unrelated to mathematics? Spencer Reid couldn't possibly resist correcting such a blunder, if he knew anything at all about formal logic -- a subdiscipline of both philosophy AND mathematics. And his account of why he likes philosophy? Because there are no right or wrong answers. Yeah, you bet. 'Cause Spencer Reid is known for his shallow, sophomoric misunderstanding of disciplines he's interested in.

Presumably the writers slept right through their freshman Intro to Philosophy course.

Also? That Existentialist light bulb joke? No, not really funny to the kind of understanding Spencer is supposed to have. Dreck. Dreck, dreck, dreck.

I think they were trying to make Spencer a geek vs. Costanza the cool da Vinci Code guy dressed up like Col. Sanders. I agree Spencer should have been better written. Still, for all its predictability, this was one of the better recent episodes. Duckman was creepy and it's always nice to see Xander hasn't grown up.

And for the record: I thought both lightbulb jokes were funny, in an ivory tower sort of way.

Yeah, thanks for making my point for me.

I was watching last night while working on a craft project. I find the show charmingly pretentious.

There are some non-dumb episodes, I think, but it's hard to sustain a weekly series with a new, different, weird psychotic serial-killer-du-semain without going to the dumb well from time to time. It's not a readily sustainable premise on that kind of writing schedule.

I don't think I can put the appeal into words just now, but I find it interesting enough to follow. Maybe it's just that I am charmed by Garcia.
