After breakfast we spent a little time wandering around taking pictures and window shopping before hitting the road for the North Cascades in earnest. This shot looks down Harris Avenue just a few steps away from the Harris Avenue Cafe where we had just eaten (see previous post).

Well we were there, a little over a week ago. We do, in fact, enjoy Fairhaven every time we visit. It's a lovely little town within a town, and if I didn't have to worry about petty things like income, I would certainly consider living there.

Clearly you need a Northwest vacation in September. We've hit a spell of sunny days with highs in the high 60s and low 70s which is my idea of perfect.

If I had money I'd drive up there to go to World Fantasy. What a heavenly trip that would be. (Except coming back home into the heat, of course.)

Lovely idea. I've never done the drive from Vancouver to Calgary. I bet it's gorgeous in places. (I was surprised to discover how lush, wet, and green Northwestern Montana is, and some of that drive would be north of there.)

We went to Calgary for Westercon -- but missed Vancouver, since we crossed the border at Sumas. It was about 11 hours there. 15 hours back, since we came back in Idaho. If there's not snow, I may want to do that again for World Fantasy!

Hum. Now I'm wondering if I should try to scrape together the money to go to World Fantasy. It's not a con that has typically appealled, culturally speaking.

The jury's out on that, but we have a Hallowe'en party every year, and this year it will be October 25 so that we can go to World Fantasy...
We may fly from Vancouver, since I used all my vacation already, what with New Orleans, San Diego's Comic-Con and Worldcon in Denver.

So, yeah, next time. I expect we will make a pilgrimage to Mt. Vernon, once Skagit Brewing is up to speed with this year's batch of Trumpeter Stout. And if we're going that far anyway, Bellingham is practically Right There. So, yeah, we'll look you up and give you a call when next we're in the area.

No, you are what you eat or weird is where the heart is or something like that, so I'm not surprised at all, it's just sometimes the magnitude of the weird is surprising. But overall, yeah, these are my peeps, and the weird is why I love them so.

Oh, yes, marvelous (but not too overwhelming) scenery along that trans-Canada highway (I did it after a Westercon in Vancouver, BC, and recall Susan Wood explaining that the speed limits are (were?) not set by the RCMP, but by the engineers who designed the highway).

Actually, I didn't get to Calgary -- the Blackfeet (Blood Band) were holding their annual Sun Dance near Stand Off, in Alberta, so I camped there for several days before hurrying back to work. [Some member of the Royal Family had been visiting, and the Government had suddenly found a lot of spare canvas to give the tribal members, so the scene included an impressive array of new tipis, rather than the grotty tents of previous years, though related tribal members from south of the Border had their usual RVs and Coleman tents.]

I did notice -- it's been decades, and things might've changed -- that the restaurants in the little towns along this highway were almost all operated by people of Chinese ancestry, but offered only rather uninspiring (though perfectly adequate, and quite hearty) Canadian cuisine.

Sounds like we'll have to get up that way some time, for sure, since we did not make it to any Canadian destinations this time. Hal wants to visit Nelson, BC one of these days, but from Idaho, the 5+ hour projected travel time to cover 150 miles was...daunting.
