Three Pretty Maids

Things are beginning to ripen in the garden. The pears in the tree by the bedroom, for instance.

Blush

Mystery apples on the big tree. The flavor is not great, alas.

First Early Girl

And the first tomato on the Early Girl plant. Which was last to bloom of the three varieties I planted this year, but earned its name back by setting fruit first.

Our Early Girl has blossom end rot. Bah. (But we have three other tomato plants, one of which is already producing cherry tomatoes.)

Blossom end rot will pass. It usually only affects the first fruits to set, although some varieties seem susceptible through out the season. It's a calcium deficiency problem, not a disease, but often affects the first fruits because the plant is still putting out so much growth. It's more like a calcium distribution problem, since there's usually calcium available, but the plant just isn't moving it around fast enough.

Some apples were bred for storage and will taste much better after being stored for a few months than they do straight off the tree. Dedicated apple enthusiasts keep spare refrigerators for storing apples.

But who knows, this one might just be a dud.

Nice pears. All this produce art is making me hungry.
I will ruminate on pears and blue cheese.

When do the apples ripen? Do you have any pix of the ripe fruit?

I think in a normal year (whatever that is) I would have tomatoes by now, but we had such a long, cold, wet spring that I didn't get much done in the garden until quite late. I will be more industrious next year, or so I tell myself.

This reminds me I must investigate a source of manure for tea. I need a broader spectrum feed than just the denatured fish juice.

It's worth trying. Last year we pretty much let the whole crop go in the wake of Hal's heart attack and recovery, so I don't know what they store up like. Barring any new disasters, I'll give it a shot this year, if the whole crop doesn't drop off prematurely, which they seem like they want to do.

No, no pictures of the ripe ones. There were distractions last summer, and I think it's another month or so before they really get ripe.
