I was disappointed to learn today that John Edwards is saying in interviews that he's not interested in being tagged for veep again.

Bummer. I really wanted him to run with Obama. That would have been perfect.

I agree. I think Edwards has a lot of what the Obama campaign and administration need, including a Southern pedigree, but I am still hopeful that Obama will appoint him to his first cabinet. One can certainly understand why, with his wife's cancer, Edwards might not want to go through the rigors of another presidential campaign for the privilege of being VP, and there are undoubtedly positions where he could be more effective. Department of Justice, for instance.

Those would be good options. I must admit, Obama/Edwards would pretty much be my dream ticket, but I can understand his reluctance. Darn, though.

See, I've thought Obama/Edwards would make a good ticket as well, but thought I was the only one. What I like about him is his strong pro-union stance.

Yes, Edwards is good on unions, and has a strong interest in populist/working class issues, which I liked him for. In general, I think he had probably the best balance of electability plus advocacy for the little guy in the original field of Democrats. On the other hand, that very advocacy would make him a kickass choice for any number of cabinet-level appointments.

I really admire how Edwards campaigned this time around. He single-handedly brought poverty back into the public discourse. There's got to be a place for him in an Obama administration. He would be excellent running either DOJ or HUD.

I completely agree, and yes, HUD is another secretariat where he would be an excellent choice.

Jim Webb is saying no, too, and I think he'd make a good VP.

Yeah. Edwards would be great as AG, even if (or especially because) Justice is looking like the Augean stables after the Ashcroft/Gonzales/Mukasey years.

I can't remember who, but someone who knows Jim Webb well was recently saying that Webb's personality is totally unsuited to the Vice Presidency, and in general, is a better resource serving Virginia right where he is.

That could be, I don't know him, just watch him on TV and read about him. He's a very effective person. But you know, he did tell Bush that info about his son was none of his business, and that wouldn't be so good in diplomatic things.
