If I wanted to find out schedules of radio shows for Los Angeles in the late '40s and early '50s, any idea what resources I might use? Should I just call the information desk at the LA County library?

You might try here (museum of television & radio)
http://www.mtr.org/

Other options might include the county historical society or anybody you know who lived there then. Also, newspapers for the period in that place.

The Museum of Television and Radio in NYC and LA has gotten more commercial over the years, but might have the information you need, or at least point to other resources.

A Google search on "radio schedule in LA 1950" turned up interesting links, some of which may be relevant.

One day we're going to reminisce about the times when the Web was so small that Googling required mad Boolean ski11z.

The only thing I could think of would be to look at old LA newspapers on microfiche for printed schedules. OTOH, old-time radio has a lot of fans, some of whom are discovering the Web. You never know.

I'd start by finding out which stations existed at that time (Google? library?) and then checking directly with the stations themselves. They might be more likely to have archival information than a third-party would.

Back then, newspapers listed the daily radio schedule, too. Are there any online-accessible archives of the L.A. Times that far back?

The city of L.A. has a better library than the county, with local history material. Got to www.lapl.org to find out where to phone or email them.

The UW Suzallo Library has a wonderful newspaper morgue. Some are the real newspapers and others are on microfiche. I do not know if they have been converted to computer documents, yet. I have not used these in a very long time, but they were a great resource, being cataloged by date. Give yourself time to read the ads.
