I have a new phone. We went down to the Cingular store to get one last night, the old one having leapt silently out of my pocket in Metro Transit gloria mundi the previous evening. Oh well, we were going to have to switch SIM chips, and therefore my phone, anyway. So I could have gotten the pink Razr. But meh.

At least the pink Razrs I've seen aren't pink enough. If I'm going to have a phone in a girly color, let it be Playmate-of-the-Year-Corvette Pink, or Hello-Kitty Pink, or Barbie-N-Pepto-Bismol Pink. Let it be a shade that Quiche Refusing Real Men would be horrified to be within a football-field's distance of, and would die rather than use. These Razrs, they come in a wan, metallic, mauvy pink that you might well have found among the silver-blues and silver bronzes of late 80s conservative sedans. Wimpy, wimpy, wimpy. Pink should be loud, proud, and a wee bit obnoxious. Just like my men.

So no pink phone for me. If only they'd had had the magenta one in stock.

BTW, if you used to be in my phone, and would like to be again, it would probably be good if you e-mailed me your number. If you don't have my e-mail address, try ulrika dot obrien in care of the good folks at Gmail.

I don't know if it helps but I have seen very, very pink phone holders/protectors. I don't even remember what color my cell phone is at the moment. It is in a black protective holder though.

I was on Cingular but I kept hearing how wonderful Verizon was plus my mother and my sister were on it so I switched. Cingular said I had to get a new phone anyway (some protocol change or something, GSM?) and the Verizon plan I checked on was cheaper, so . . . I actually didn't have any significant problems with Cingular in the SF Bay area except that there wasn't a good signal in and around my work parking lot, which is where I would normally attempt to make a call to say I'm on the way home. Verizon does not have that problem.

What color did you end up with?

I agree re: pink, but I got a pink razr anyway.

Oh, I got a very ordinary-looking Nokia flip-phone in black and silver, 'cause it was the highest rated one that came free-with-the-rebate. It would have to be a major case of lust before would I pay money for a cell phone.

When I got my first (and still only) cellphone, I signed up online and because of that, got a nice color flip phone free. Every so often, T-Mobile sends me an ad to buy a new cellphone that isn't as nice as the one I have.

Pink phones are good in a casting-against-type sort of way. Practical considerations are more important, with sound and microphone trumping image. Still.

I'm in the book, and have had the same phone # for over 20 years. Take THAT, 21st Century!

I've only had my phone number for 15.5 years -- I changed it from a landline to a cellphone a couple of years ago.

But I can't afford mics and sound and stuff like that. It's a cellphone. Period.

Cellphones have sound pick ups (mics) and speakers so you can hear. One of my biggest complaints about cell-phones is how bad the sound is, coming and going. You don't need an external earpiece for the issues to come into play. I'd probably get a bluetooth, for various reasons. I'm still a long way from getting a cell-phone, or even a portable computer. I don't take my office with me.

Oh! I was thinking you meant a cellphone that recorded and played video and such. I can't afford one like that. The doctors told me to get a CB radio when I came home from the second long hospitalization in case I needed to call 911 while I was in the car. I never used it. A few years ago they told me to get a cellphone for the same reason and at first I resisted because all the ads I'd seen were too expensive. Then the WashPost had a spread of the companies and their plans and T-Mobile, which covers my area well, had a really cheap plan. Cheaper than the landline, and because I signed up online, I got a nice phone free. So I got that and got rid of the landline.

I haven't had any problems with the sound as long as the other person is getting good reception.

Most of the calls during a month are not business, since I don't work anymore, but between me and various bits of Kaiser, because I am sick.
