Half Century

Boy, being on Facebook means never having to say, "No one remembered my birthday," I tell you what. Took the afternoon off to goof off a bit, try paint-your-own pottery for the first time, and take afternoon tea with a few friends. Got flowers from Hal and had steak for dinner. A lovely day. This weekend I'll make a pilgrimage to Kirkland to get a slice of proper birthday cake -- it's not a birthday unless there's green marzipan on the cake -- and eventually I'll use the Groupon for glassblowing a flower, glassblowing being something else I've never tried and long wanted to. As I embark on my second half-century, I figure trying something new for each birthday is a reasonable ambition for keeping things fresh and forward-looking. I've got a whole year to get my nut up for indoor sky diving next year...

That sounds like a fabulous day. Glassblowing! I have wanted to make glass beads for some time, but I never thought of glassblowing. Cool idea.

You can't hardly turn around in metro Seattle without tripping over a place that offers glassblowing classes any more, and now there's one in Renton that does various single-item sessions where the staff help you work with hot glass for a particular pre-selected project. They also do a lot of Groupon offers, and when they sent out the Mother's Day promotion for getting to blow a single glass flower for $24, I gave in. It's clearly meant to be a loss leader to get you in the door and give you a taste for it to sell the real classes, but what the hell. For now I'll take the taster spoon.

DOHH! Well I managed to miss your b'day 'cause I've barely even been on FB lately, but happy half-century, U.! In other news...there's a place in Koikland that does the green marzipan of renown...? :b

Thank you! I am very glad for you that you don't have the time to be on FB -- the gloriously wonderful weather has been paying off. And yes, Hoffman's in Kirkland does a proper Princess torte and they usually have them whole or by the slice. When Hal and I lived in Redmond we'd get there more often, especially since it's just a few doors down from Noah's Bagels, and an Original Pancake House is also nearby.

Are we ALL turning fifty this year? Is there something sociological going on that we've not realised? Oh, and happy birthday.

Well, all of us who were born in '62, anyhow. A belated happy bird thay to you, too.

Amateur. I've been 50 for nearly five years.

Wait wait! I better include an emoticon so you know I'm kidding: ;>

Well, you did have a head start and all.

Glad to hear it was a good birthday. You share the day with my older sister, who turned 60 yesterday. Our baby sister turned 50 last month, making it even harder for us to go on calling her the baby sister.

Happy, happy, happiest of birthdays, Ulrika, and many, many more!
